Montana Wounded Warriors took two wounded Montana veterans from Great Falls on our second annual trip to Culbertson for pheasant and whitetail hunting the first weekend of November. Tsgt Aaron Evenson who served with the 22sfs, UASF and SGT E5 KC Sivumaki with F Co 2nd BN 5th Marine,USMC were accompanied by board member Justin Breck of Columbia Falls. Alan and Raedelle Aspenlieder graciously opened their home to our group again this year. The veterans were able to hunt birds on land owned by the family of Rep. Austin Knudsen and deer on land along the Yellowstone River owned by Rep. Matt Rosendale.
Our wounded warriors arrived in Culbertson on Thursday the 31st of Oct and got an early start on hunting birds Friday morning with the help of Scott Aspenlieder’s dog Mace. The 5000 acre farm hadn’t been hunted yet this fall so the pheasants and sharp tail grouse were plentiful and the guys were able to shoot many birds. The shooting was fast and furious as the vets with the help of Scott, Justin, Austin and Jordan Knudsen, Travis Joyner and Matt Rosendale and Mace were able to get the birds up in the air. That afternoon our two warriors got a big surprise when they were presented new rifles for the next days deer hunt.
Scott had approached businesses and individuals whom he knew supported what Montana Wounded Warriors does to help our wounded vets and raised the funds to give our two hunters brand new Winchester .308 rifles with Leupold scopes. Aaron and KC were eager to put the new rifles to good use and the next day headed out to hunt deer. Aaron was fortunate enough to take his first buck ever with his new rifle on Matt’s land but KC wasn’t as fortunate on a 350 yard shot at a nice 4 point. The last day of the hunt Aaron went back to hunt more birds while KC tried to fill his Deer tag.
Montana Wounded Warriors would like to thank all of the wonderful people of the Culbertson who made our warriors feel so welcome and appreciated. The Aspenlieders not only provided a wonderful place to stay but never let the table hungry with Raedelle’s wonderful cooking. The people who donated towards the firearms let the veterans know how much they support our military and appreciate what these young men sacrificed in their service to our country and state. Next year hopefully we’ll be invited back and be able to provide another great experience to another pair of Montana’s wounded warriors.
